Paper Production & The Deforestation Myth
Paper often takes the blame for deforestation, with common beliefs equating printing with forest destruction. You’ve probably heard the line, “You’re printing half the Amazon Rainforest there!” or the email signature that reads, “Please don’t print this email unless you really need to.”
However, it’s time to see paper in a new light: as a renewable resource.
Reimagining Paper as Sustainable
Think of it this way: “Go ahead…print this email!” Paper is a biodegradable, recyclable product from trees grown specifically for this purpose. It fuels sustainable forestry, supports jobs globally, and responsibly managed forests improve the environment. These forests provide clean air, water, wildlife habitats, and help store carbon.
The paper industry also invests in reversing deforestation through sustainable practices. For example, International Paper supports reforestation projects that contribute to healthier forests. While some papers still come from poorly managed forests (mostly in certain Asian regions), choosing paper with the FSC® or PEFC™ logo ensures it’s sustainably sourced.
The Real Cause of Deforestation: Agriculture
If not paper, what drives deforestation? The biggest factor is agriculture, especially in tropical rainforests. According to WWF, agriculture claims around 17% of the Amazon Rainforest, mostly for cattle ranching, while valuable resources like mahogany, gold, and oil further threaten these sensitive areas.
